Since the beginning of 1999 a selection of the smaller moths caught in the light traps have been set aside for later determination. This has, as expected, produced a good number of species new to the reserve: March, April – 3; May, June – 22; July – 46; August – 23; September – 6; October – 1; November – 1.
A total for the year of 102 new species, which brings the site list to 253 species.
A separate list was kept for the micro-moths caught on the “National Moth-night” on 17 July. Twenty-five species were recorded.
During the year six species were recorded which are new for Northamptonshire (VC 32). These are:
567 Coleophora adspersella – recorded in week 27. This moth is one of a complex of about half a dozen species, the larvae all feeding in cases on the seeds of Chenopodium or Atriplex. Neither the larval cases nor the moths can be reliably separated, so most confirmed records are by dissection of the moths. In England the moth is “widespread but local, mainly south of a line from the Wash to the Mersey estuary”.
682 epressaria chaerophylli – recorded on 8 November. Larvae feed on the flowers of Chaerophyllum (Rough Chervil) which occurs throughout the county, but the moth is not often seen.
801a Gelechia senticetella – recorded in week 31. This is a species, native to southern Europe, first found in Britain It is probable that it was introduced with conifers imported by garden centres, rather than arriving as a migrant. Larvae were first identified in Britain in 1997, feeding in Lawson’s cypress and more recently on Thuja species (Heckford, R.J. 1999. Notes on the larvae of seven species of Microlepidoptera not previously described in the British literature …. – Entomologist’s Gaz. 50: 223-237.).
1047 Acleris schalleriana – recorded in week 33. The larvae feed on Viburnum spp. – Wayfaring Tree or Guelder Rose.
1157 Crocidosema plebeina – recorded in week 31. The larvae feed in the seeds of Lavatera (tree mallow). This is mainly a coastal species, presumably now becoming adapted to the foodplant in inland gardens.
1233 Pammene aurita (= aurantiana) – a tortricid with ferruginous-orange colouring, the larvae feeding in the seeds of sycamore. First recognised as British in the 1950’s, it appears to have become established in southern counties of England and Wales. Three specimens in week 29, including one on “moth-night”, 17 July.
