Key to Text Moths of Northamptonshire

Key to Map
  Pale-lemon Sallow Xanthia ocellaris

  Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Local.

Primary Habitat:  Woodland.

Flight Period: Single brooded in September and October.

Localities: Everdon Stubbs, Kingsthorpe, Thrapston and Whitewater Reservoir.

Observations: Although still local the species has undoubtedly increased its distribution within the county in recent years. As four of the six modern records are from gardens this suggests that the species is now probably under recorded. The first record was taken from a Monks Wood record card and was in respect of a moth taken between 1961 and 1967 in a Peterborough garden light trap. All of my early attempts in the 1980’s and 1990’s to find the caterpillar in fallen poplar catkins from various sites around the county were unsuccessful.

First Record: Post 1961, Pooles.
