Key to Text Moths of Northamptonshire

Key to Map
  Barred Hook-tip Drepana cultraria

  Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Local.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Double brooded in May and June and again in July and August.

Localities: Hazelborough Forest, Barford Meadows, Harringworth Lake and Wittering Copse.

Observations: Moths were much more plentiful in actinic light traps left overnight under beech at Grafton Park Wood in the 1970’s than in m.v. light traps similarly sited at Geddington Chase in the 1990’s. My own field records show that I have usually seen the second brood of the moth rather than the first brood. Over the past decade to 2003 I have seen the species in six years, all in July or August. Males can sometimes be seen flying around beech in the sunshine; at such times I have usually found them difficult to net.

L.O.N.: 1906. Northampton. At street lamp.

First Record: 1906, Hebenden.
